Full Text of the Service

Welcome to this house of worship this very special morning! The Word of the Lord breaks into our lives as it did for Abraham and Sarah, for Mary and Martha, in the midst of our struggle to understand and cope with our everyday tasks and problems. Regardless of the state of our own preparation for hearing the Word today, God takes the initiative once again and makes Himself available to us in Word and Sacrament so we may be refreshed and renewed for service in his kingdom. He provides the “one needful thing,” the Good News of our salvation in Jesus, and our hearts are opened by His love.

We prepare to worship

Prelude: Mark Simons Orchestra

Deacon’s Prayer

Call to Worship: St. Ansgar's Handbell Choir

We speak to God

Opening Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Invocation:
P: In the name of the Father, who created and provides for us, we say
C: God is with us. Alleluia!

P: And of the Son, Jesus our Saviour, who died and rose that we may live eternally, we say
C: God is with us. Alleluia!

P: And of the Holy Spirit, who assures us of God’s presence and keeps us in the faith, we say
C: God is with us. Alleluia!

Confession & Forgiveness:
P: God does indeed bless us. Therefore we bring before almighty God those things which lie heavily upon us.
(Silence for a time of personal reflection.)
Almighty God, we confess to you those things which you already know.

C: We have abandoned Your Word, Lord. We have sought a peace of our own making. We have grieved Your Holy Spirit. Forgive us, we pray, in the name of Jesus Christ who died and rose again.

P: There is good news for us. God has so loved us He gave His only Son to die for us. Those who receive Jesus are given the power to become the children of God and are granted the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus there is forgiveness and peace which the world cannot give. Christ is risen!
C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.

Kryie:
P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
P; Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
C: Amen.

Hymn of Praise: Beautiful Saviour

Beautiful Saviour, King of creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love thee, Truly I’d serve thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Saviour, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honour, Praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be thine!

P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.

Let us pray:
P: Let us pray… O God, from whom all good things come: Lead us by the inspiration of your Spirit to think those things which are right, and by your goodness help us to do them; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen

God Speaks to Us

First Lesson: 1 Peter 3: 13-22

13Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? 14But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, 15but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;
16 yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil.
18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.
21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

    Gospel: John 14:15-21

15 ’If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
18 ’I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’

Thank you for joining us and adding to the power of working together to help 20 million HIV and AIDS-affected and -infected children and poverty in Africa.
For the past 20 years, mothers and children of Africa, living with and being affected by HIV and AIDS have been ignored by the world. Mothers and children should be free from discrimination and have access to education, treatment, care, and support. Mothers and children, infected and affected by HIV and AIDS, should have access to the knowledge and support to prevent further HIV infection in their communities. Mothers and children, living with and being affected by HIV and AIDS have a right to live like every body else in the world. We are trying to raise awareness and raise funds for the 20 million children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa. ONE DOLLAR PER CHILD, can make a difference.
HIV is among the five leading causes of death in the world. Since its identification 20 years ago, the pandemic has affected about 46 million people worldwide. Africa, particularly the sub-Sahara region, has been the hardest hit, with 36 million people, including 20 million children. About 5.6 million mothers and children are living with HIV and Aids in South Africa. Every day, one thousand (1000) people die of Aids-relateddisease. The vast majority of South Africans living with HIV, do not know they have acquired the virus.
Zerf Challenge 2020 team, made a commitment to increase their humanitarian contribution to raise awareness and funds, by climbing Kilimanjaro for the victims in the Cameroon, Congo, Chad, and Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. If you care, add your name to Zerf Challenge 2020 team and help the mothers, fathers, and children in Africa.
This morning you have come to make a difference in the lives of these African children.
