Seniors' Luncheons

See Pictures from the Seniors' Events of 1998-2004 (Courtesy Anna Thomsen) have been posted. Look back on many familiar faces, a number of which are, sadly, no longer with us.

In the late 1980's suggestions started to proliferate that something should be done to socialize the Seniors of St. Ansgar's Church. Hertha Petersen was one of the movers. Little by little, she and Camilla Clausen started a monthly get-together for tea and sandwiches. Before long, Joan Kristensen and Rigmor Brandt became involved with the group.

Then in early 1990 the group really took off. Rosa Christensen thought the group would have more success drawing people if a hot lunch was served for the seniors. So, it was that she and her crew started serving monthly lunches to the Seniors.

Now the Seniors meet on the third Wednesday of each month. They start at 11:30 a.m. with a short worship service and communion. Then they go into Beck Hall for a wonderful hot lunch prepared by Rosa and her crew. The seniors have a wonderful time, catching up on news. For many, it is their only outing, as they are unable to leave their home without assistance. Thus, those that attend and are able to pick up the housebound seniors are much in demand.

During the summer months, the Seniors have one Lunch at Rosa's and another at a restaurant, to make it extra special. The group has now been in operation for over 10 years, and promises to keep going for many more. It is one of St. Ansgar Church's community outreach programs.
