St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church - Montreal
Notes of Thomas Sweet
Pastor M. Holobow - 1989

The following inscription was found on the back of the picture of Thomas Sweet & family:

God's work among the Danes in Montreal began as early as 1911, when the Atlantic District of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church sent a lay preacher, Mr. Thomas A. Sweet, to serve their needs. He held the first worship service on October 1, 1911 and the following January a congregation with 17 members was organized (information taken from St. Ansgar's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Montreal Anniverary Book 1927-1987). Mr. Sweet held worship services every Sunday and on all church holidays (often over 60 services a year) and left in the spring of 1917. Various members then took turns holding a reading service until April, 1918. Five of the original 17 members were still with the group although a total of 57 had been admitted over the years

One of our members today, Laura Elby, this 22nd day of February, 1989, remembers attending Sunday School at the back of a shop while Mr. Sweet was the lay preacher
