St. Ansgar

1.
What St. Ansgar of Denmark was working for
Was to have Danes adopt Christianity,
And make them forget about Odin and Thor,
And no longer use profanity.

2.
Christianity took time to come into force,
And for a hundred years or more,
Danes were buried with a Cross,
But also a Hammer, the symbol of Thor.

3.
Danes were then clearly hedging their bets,
By trying to please more than one master,
They weren't sure whom to respect,
And who was in charge of the "Hereafter".

4.
St. Ansgar and Sid are a bit the same,
Success they did achieve,
They both had to deal with difficult Danes,
But --- they made them believe.
